European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli is calling for a smarter approach to sharing information in order to tackle security and border management challenges. In a recently published opinion on a pair of frameworks, Buttarelli said interoperability has both benefits and faults, as allowing databases to communicate with one another can help with law enforcement investigations but also puts data subjects at risk of data breaches. “The Commission’s Proposals would alter the structure and operation of the EU’s existing IT databases and change the way in which fundamental legal principles in this area have traditionally been interpreted,� Buttarelli said, adding, “wider debate on the future of information exchange in the EU, the governance of interoperable databases and the safeguarding of fundamental rights is needed.�
